take care of you

Recovery is part of the plan.

Why doing less, sometimes, is how you get further, and the small habits that keep you showing up, season after season.

When we think about improving our fitness, it's easy to focus on doing more. Another workout. Another run. Another early alarm. There's a quiet belief that if we just push a little harder, results will follow.

But progress isn't built by constantly pushing harder. It's built by finding a rhythm you can sustain, one that fits around work, family, and the rest of a real life. The people who stay strong for the long haul aren't the ones who train the hardest for a few weeks. They're the ones who keep going for years.

Recovery isn't stopping.

Recovery isn't about stopping, it's about preparing your body to keep showing up. Every hard session creates small amounts of stress and micro-damage in your muscles. Recovery is when your body repairs that tissue, refills its energy stores, and comes back a little more capable than before. Skip it for too long and you don't get fitter; you get tired, sore, and more likely to pick up an injury.

Whether it's a walk with the family, a mobility session, stretching after work, or simply getting an extra hour of sleep, every small choice helps you move better tomorrow. Recovery is where the work you've already done actually turns into progress.

Keep moving.

Movement doesn't always have to leave you exhausted. Some of the most valuable sessions are the ones that simply keep you moving, gently raising your heart rate, easing stiffness, and helping your body clear the fatigue of a harder day. This is often called active recovery, and it's one of the most underrated tools in training.

You don't need a plan or a gym for it. A few easy options:

  • Go for a 30-minute walk, outdoors if you can.
  • Stretch while you watch TV in the evening.
  • Swap the lift for the stairs.
  • Spend 10 minutes on mobility before bed.

Not every day has to be your hardest day. In fact, most of them shouldn't be.

Where progress happens.

If training is the spark, recovery is where it catches. These are the everyday building blocks worth protecting, none of them complicated, all of them powerful when you do them consistently.

Quality sleep

Sleep is the single most effective recovery tool you have. It's when the body releases most of its repair hormones and consolidates the gains from your training. Aim for a consistent bedtime and seven to nine hours where you can.

Plenty of water

Even mild dehydration affects strength, focus and how you feel. Keep a bottle within reach through the day, and drink a little more around your sessions.

Protein with your meals

Protein gives your muscles the raw material to rebuild. Spreading it across your meals, rather than saving it all for dinner, helps your body make the most of it.

Gentle movement

Light activity on your off days keeps blood flowing to tired muscles and eases soreness. Think walking, stretching, or an easy mobility flow.

Time to recharge

Recovery is mental as much as physical. A slower morning, time outdoors, or an evening away from the screen all help you come back ready.
